"Selective Hearing" – The Art of Training a Stubborn Frenchie

"Selective Hearing" – The Art of Training a Stubborn Frenchie

If you've ever called your French Bulldog's name only to watch them stare at you, blink slowly, and then walk in the opposite direction—congratulations, you own a typical Frenchie.

At Angry Frenchie, we know these dogs aren't "untrainable"; they're just highly skilled negotiators. They don't work for free, and they certainly don't work for someone they don't respect. Here is how to win the battle of wills without losing your mind.

1. The "What's In It For Me?" Principle

A German Shepherd lives to please. A Frenchie lives to be pleased. To train them, you must find their "currency."

The Solution: Use high-value rewards (think small pieces of boiled chicken or freeze-dried liver) that they only get during training. If the reward is boring, they'll decide that napping is a better use of their time.

2. The "Statue Act" (And How to Break It)

We've all been there: halfway through a walk, your Frenchie decides they are done. They plant their feet, become a 12kg lead weight, and refuse to budge.

The Trick: Never pull back (it becomes a tug-of-war they will win). Instead, change the angle. Turn 180 degrees, or move in a circle. Most importantly, lure them forward with a toy or treat rather than force.

3. Keep it Short and Sweet

Frenchies have the attention span of a squirrel in a nut factory. If a training session lasts longer than 5–10 minutes, they will mentally "check out."

The Strategy: Aim for 3 mini-sessions a day rather than one long hour. Always end on a "win" (a command they know perfectly, like 'Sit') so they walk away feeling like the champion they think they are.

4. Consistency is King

If you let them on the sofa on Monday, don't be surprised when they scream at you for being banned from it on Tuesday. They are masters of finding loopholes in your rules.

The Rule: Everyone in the house must use the same words and the same boundaries. If one person gives in to those puppy eyes, the training is reset to zero.

The "Sofa King" Mindset

Let's be honest: part of why we love them is their stubborn, "I'm the boss" personality. They aren't just pets; they are roommates with very strong opinions.

When your "Stubborn King" finally nails a new trick, celebrate it! Reward their focus with a calming environment. After a tough training session, there's nothing better than a quiet house and the gentle scent of a pet-safe candle to help your little overachiever drift off into a 4-hour nap.

Pro Tip: Our Low Poly Frenchie Candle is the perfect desk companion while you research more training tips—it's the only Frenchie that's guaranteed to stay exactly where you put it!
