You love candles. You love your Frenchie. Here's how to enjoy both without worry.
If you share your home with a French Bulldog, you've probably wondered at some point: is it actually safe to burn candles around my dog?
It's a fair question. Dogs spend a lot of time close to the floor, they breathe faster than we do, and their respiratory systems are more sensitive to airborne particles. For flat-faced breeds like Frenchies — who already have compromised airways — the quality of the air they breathe matters even more.
The good news: with the right candles, you can absolutely enjoy a beautifully scented home without putting your pet at risk. Here's everything you need to know.
Why Some Candles Are Harmful to Pets
Not all candles are created equal. Many mass-market candles contain ingredients that can be problematic for pets:
Paraffin Wax
Most cheap candles are made from paraffin wax — a petroleum by-product. When burned, paraffin releases toluene and benzene, both of which are known carcinogens. It also produces significantly more soot than natural waxes, which can irritate your dog's respiratory system, particularly in brachycephalic breeds like French Bulldogs who already struggle to breathe efficiently.
Synthetic Fragrances
Many candles use synthetic fragrance oils that contain phthalates — chemical compounds used to make scents last longer. Phthalates are endocrine disruptors and have been linked to health issues in both humans and animals. They're also commonly found in cheap reed diffusers and air fresheners.
Lead-Core Wicks
While now banned in the UK and EU, some imported candles still use metal-core wicks that release heavy metals when burned. Always check that your candles use cotton or wooden wicks.
Certain Essential Oils
Even "natural" candles can be problematic if they contain essential oils that are toxic to dogs. Oils to avoid include tea tree, eucalyptus, pennyroyal, pine, cinnamon, and citrus oils in high concentrations. Always check the ingredients if you're buying essential oil candles.
Why Soy Wax Candles Are Safer for Pets
Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil — a natural, renewable resource. It burns significantly cleaner than paraffin, producing up to 90% less soot and releasing far fewer toxins into the air.
Here's why soy makes a meaningful difference for pet owners:
- Cleaner burn. Less soot means less airborne particulate matter for your dog to inhale.
- Lower melting point. Soy candles burn cooler, which means the fragrance is released more gently and gradually rather than in a sudden burst.
- Biodegradable and non-toxic. If your dog somehow gets into the wax (it happens), soy wax is non-toxic and won't cause serious harm.
- No petroleum by-products. None of the toluene or benzene associated with paraffin wax.
- Longer burn time. Soy candles typically burn 25-50% longer than paraffin equivalents, so you're getting better value too.
✅ The bottom line: A well-made soy wax candle with a cotton or wooden wick, free from phthalates and toxic essential oils, is a significantly safer choice for homes with pets than a standard paraffin candle.

Safe Candle Burning Tips for Dog Owners
Even with the safest candle, a few common-sense precautions go a long way:
- Always burn in a ventilated room. Open a window slightly to allow fresh air circulation. This is good practice regardless of candle type.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended — especially with a curious Frenchie in the room.
- Keep candles out of reach. Frenchies are low to the ground but surprisingly resourceful. Place candles on high surfaces away from wagging tails.
- Trim the wick to 5mm before each burn to minimise soot and ensure a clean, even flame.
- Don't burn for more than 4 hours at a time. Give the room a chance to air out between burns.
- Watch for signs of irritation. If your dog starts coughing, sneezing excessively, or seems uncomfortable when you burn a candle, extinguish it and ventilate the room.
⚠️ Special note for Frenchie owners: Because French Bulldogs are brachycephalic, they are more sensitive to airborne irritants than other breeds. Always ensure good ventilation when burning any candle, and if your Frenchie shows any signs of respiratory distress, consult your vet.
