Because when it's hot outside, your Frenchie is already struggling — and they can't tell you.
French Bulldogs are many things: charming, stubborn, hilarious, and deeply committed to napping. But there's one thing they are absolutely not built for — heat.
As a brachycephalic breed (that's the fancy word for "flat-faced"), Frenchies have a significantly harder time regulating their body temperature than other dogs. Their shortened airways mean they can't pant as efficiently, which is a dog's primary way of cooling down. Add in a bit of British summer sunshine — or a proper heatwave — and things can get dangerous very quickly.
This guide covers everything you need to know to keep your French Bulldog safe, cool, and comfortable when temperatures rise.
Why Frenchies Struggle in the Heat More Than Other Dogs
Most dogs cool themselves by panting — breathing rapidly to evaporate moisture from their tongue and airways. It's a simple, effective system. For Frenchies, it's not so simple.
Their flat faces mean narrower nostrils, a longer soft palate, and a narrower trachea. All of this restricts airflow, making panting far less efficient. In hot weather, this can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heatstroke — both of which are medical emergencies.
Signs your Frenchie is overheating include:
- Excessive, laboured panting
- Drooling more than usual
- Bright red or pale gums
- Lethargy or weakness
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Stumbling or loss of coordination
- Collapse
If you notice any of these signs, move your dog to a cool area immediately and contact your vet.
💧 Hydration: How to Keep Your Frenchie Drinking
In hot weather, hydration is everything. Here's how to make sure your Frenchie is drinking enough:
- Always have fresh, cool water available — multiple bowls around the house if possible. Change it frequently; dogs are more likely to drink fresh water.
- Add ice cubes to the water bowl. Most Frenchies love fishing them out, and it keeps the water cooler for longer.
- Try a pet water fountain. The moving water encourages many dogs to drink more.
- Offer frozen treats. Freeze low-sodium chicken broth or plain yoghurt in ice cube trays for a hydrating, cooling snack.
- Wet their food slightly if they eat dry kibble — it adds extra moisture to their diet.
- Take water on walks. A collapsible travel bowl and a bottle of water are essential kit in summer.
💧 How much water does a Frenchie need? As a general guide, dogs need around 50ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day — more in hot weather or after exercise. An average adult Frenchie weighing 10kg should be drinking around 500ml daily as a minimum.
🕒 When NOT to Walk Your Frenchie in Summer
This is one of the most important things you can do for your Frenchie's safety in hot weather. The rule is simple:
If it's above 20°C, think carefully.
If it's above 25°C, don't walk your Frenchie in the middle of the day.
The safest times to walk your Frenchie in summer are:
- Early morning — before 8am, when temperatures are at their lowest
- Late evening — after 8pm, once the sun has gone down and pavements have cooled
The pavement test: Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your Frenchie's paws. Burnt paw pads are painful and can happen in minutes on hot tarmac.
Keep summer walks short and slow. This is not the season for long adventures. A 10-15 minute gentle stroll in the cool of the morning is far better than a 45-minute walk in the afternoon heat.
❄️ How to Help Your Frenchie Stay Cool at Home
On very hot days, keeping your Frenchie comfortable indoors is the priority. Here's what works:
Keep the house cool
- Close curtains and blinds on south-facing windows during the day to block out direct sun.
- Open windows in the early morning to let cool air in, then close them before it gets hot.
- Use a fan — place a bowl of ice in front of it for a DIY air conditioning effect.
- If you have air conditioning, use it. Your Frenchie will thank you.
Create a cool zone
- Set up a cooling mat in a shaded area. These use gel or water to absorb body heat and can make a real difference.
- A damp towel on the floor works well too — many Frenchies will lie on it instinctively.
- Tiles and stone floors are naturally cooler — let your Frenchie find their own cool spot.
Cool them down safely
- Wet their paws and belly with cool (not cold) water. These areas have more blood vessels close to the surface, so cooling them is effective.
- A cool damp cloth on the back of the neck and armpits can help quickly.
- Never use ice-cold water or ice packs directly on the skin — this can cause blood vessels to constrict and actually trap heat inside.
- A paddling pool in the garden (in the shade) can be a great option for Frenchies who enjoy water.
⚠️ Never leave your Frenchie in a car. Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a parked car can reach 47°C within an hour. On a hot day, it can become fatal within minutes. Not even with the windows cracked. Not even for a quick errand.
🧠 Summer Frenchie Checklist
Keep this handy on hot days:
- ✅ Fresh, cool water available at all times
- ✅ Walks only before 8am or after 8pm
- ✅ Pavement test done before every walk
- ✅ Cooling mat or damp towel set up indoors
- ✅ Curtains closed on sunny windows
- ✅ Fan or air conditioning running
- ✅ No time alone in the car
- ✅ Vet's number saved in your phone
When to Call the Vet
Don't wait to see if things improve. If your Frenchie shows any signs of heatstroke — excessive panting, drooling, red gums, weakness, vomiting, or collapse — call your vet immediately.
While you wait or travel to the vet, move your dog to a cool area, offer small sips of cool water, and apply cool (not cold) wet cloths to their body. Do not submerge them in cold water.
Heatstroke in dogs can cause organ damage and can be fatal. Early action saves lives.
Keep Them Cool, Keep Them Happy
Summer with a Frenchie is still wonderful — early morning walks when the world is quiet, lazy afternoons on the cool kitchen floor, frozen treats and paddling pools. You just need to be a little more thoughtful about when and how you do things.
Your Frenchie trusts you completely. In the heat, that trust matters more than ever.
