What Is a Lithophane?

A lithophane is a piece of translucent material — in our case, 3D-printed PLA — that has been sculpted with varying thicknesses to create an image. Where the material is thicker, less light passes through and the image appears darker. Where it's thinner, more light shines through and the image appears lighter.

The result is a photograph that's invisible in normal light, but reveals itself in stunning detail when backlit. It's part sculpture, part photograph, part magic trick.

Lithophanes have been around since the 19th century, when they were made from fine porcelain and displayed in windows. We've brought the technique into the 21st century with precision 3D printing — and the results are genuinely breathtaking.

What Makes a Great Lithophane Photo?

Not all photos work equally well as lithophanes. Here's what to look for:

• Good contrast. Photos with clear light and dark areas produce the most striking results. Avoid very flat, low-contrast images.
• Sharp focus. The finer the detail in your photo, the more impressive the lithophane. Blurry photos lose detail in the conversion.
• Simple backgrounds. A subject against a plain or simple background tends to produce cleaner, more readable results.
• High resolution. The higher the resolution of your original photo, the more detail we can capture. Aim for at least 1MB.
• Faces and pets. These work beautifully — the subtle gradations of light capture expression and personality in a way that's genuinely moving.

French Bulldogs, as it happens, make exceptional lithophane subjects. Those expressive faces, the wrinkles, the ears — all of it translates beautifully into light and shadow.
