A Brief History of the French Bulldog
Despite the name, the French Bulldog's origins lie in England. During the Industrial Revolution, lace workers in Nottingham kept small Toy Bulldogs as companion dogs. When many of these workers emigrated to France in search of better opportunities, they brought their dogs with them. In France, the breed was crossed with local ratters and Pugs, gradually developing the distinctive large bat ears, compact muscular frame, and flat face we recognise today.
By the late 19th century, the "Bouledogue Français" had become enormously fashionable in Parisian society — favoured by artists, writers, and socialites. Edgar Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec were among those charmed by the breed. The French Bulldog was, and remains, a dog with a taste for culture and comfort.
Why French Bulldogs and Halloween Just Work
Halloween as we know it has roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when it was believed the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin.
